Danish Public Prosecutor seizes 423 fake websites

The Danish Public Prosecutor seizes 423 websites in the biggest action of its kind so far.

Several Danish domains include websites that either sell illegal counterfeits or defraud customers of their money and personal data.

In the biggest legal attack on such websites so far the Danish Public Prosecutor for Serious Economic and International Crime has seized a total of 423 websites as a result of a number of rulings made by the Copenhagen City Court. DK Hostmaster, which handles all Danish domains, is now to hand over the domains to the Danish Public Prosecutor.

The action was initiated when the Danish organisation E-mærket reported more than 500 Danish domains that it suspected to be fake web shops to the police. The websites lured consumers with very cheap brands and they were all registered by foreign individuals, primarily from China.

No one has yet been arrested, but the investigation into the individuals and the networks behind the online fraud continues.
