Doctors' relations with stores specialized in the sale of medical devices to be made public

The Danish executive order on healthcare professionals' relationships with pharmaceutical and medical device companies and stores specialized in the sale of medical devices has been amended through a new executive order, according to which doctors shall make public their relationship with stores specialized in the sale of medical devices. The rules came into force on 10 July 2019.

According to Section 17 of the executive order, the new rules stipulate that doctors who have a relationship in the form of ownership of stores specialized in the sale of medical devices have to make public which devices are sold and the price of said devices. The doctor has to publicize this in writing in the waiting room at the treatment facility, and at the sales outlet there has to be a written notice on the premises of the specialized store to which the public has access, and there has to be a digital notice on the website of the store. If the relation between the doctor and the store is not ownership, the sales outlet has to make public the doctor's other medical practices as well as any other relation to pharmaceutical and medical device companies and stores specialized in the sale of medical devices the doctor may have.

This information has to remain public as long as the relation between the doctor in question and the specialized store exists.

The new rules show that the legislators want to make sure that healthcare professionals remain independent, and that the legislators still have focus on the transparency about healthcare professionals' relationships with the Life Science industry.
